Lesson 1 - Introduction to Coping Power & Emotions
Lesson objectives:
Students will understand the purpose and structure of Coping Power Rural.
Students will develop deeper connections with peers.
Students will label different body signals and physical cues of emotions in themselves.
Students will evaluate differences in emotional intensities in themselves.

Lesson 2 - Perspective Taking
Lesson objectives:
Students will be able to explain the concept of perspective-taking.
Students will apply the concept of perspective-taking to social situations.
Students will identify problems in social situations using perspective-taking.
Students will be able to explain the importance of perspective-taking for healthy social relationships.

Lesson 3 - The PICC Model
Lesson objectives:
Students will identify and explain the steps of the PICC model for social problem-solving.
Students will practice problem identification in situations where there may be opposing goals or perspectives.
Students will ask themselves questions about others’ perspectives when solving peer disagreements.
Students will describe possible actions and the positive and negative consequences of those actions when resolving conflicts.

Lesson 4- Self-Control and Active Coping
Lesson objectives:
Students will explain the purpose of the PICC model and list its steps, explaining how these relate to the Thoughts, Actions, Feelings Triangle.
Students will identify healthy active coping strategies they can use to manage more challenging emotions at varying levels of intensity.
Students will identify when to use healthy proactive strategies to reduce intense, challenging emotional experiences such as anger or stress.

Lesson 5- Automatic Thoughts
Lesson objectives:
Students will accept self-talk as common and normal while recognizing that some self-talk is helpful and some is unhelpful.
Students will define automatic thoughts and come up with examples of automatic thoughts in social situations.
Students will evaluate how different types of negative self-talk relate to different levels of emotional intensities.
Students will create examples of unhelpful thinking styles.

Lesson 6- Thought-Based Coping
Lesson objectives:
Students will use the Mood Monitor to identify triggers, unhelpful automatic thoughts, and the emotions experienced in relation to the triggers and thoughts.
Students will practice identifying and interrupting unhelpful automatic thoughts
Students will practice generating coping statements in response to difficult situations.
Students will apply thought-based coping to the PICC model.

Lesson 7- Preventative Relaxation
Lesson objectives:
Students will be able to explain the importance of relaxation for mental and physical health.
Students will practice relaxation activities to regulate more challenging emotions in healthy ways.
Students will analyze differences between proactive and reactive relaxation strategies.
Students will identify strategies they can use to relax during emotionally difficult situations.

Lesson 8- Active Listening
Lesson objectives:
Students will review and practice relaxation strategies.
Students will explain the connection between active listening and the PICC model.
Students will define and provide examples of active listening.
Students will demonstrate active listening with a peer.

Lesson 9- I-Messages
Lesson objectives:
Students will use I-message statements to promote healthy communication between peers.
Students will describe the difference between I-message and You-message statements.
Students will combine active listening and I-messages to practice assertive communication with peers.
Students will explain the importance of using I-message statements for healthy social problem-solving skills.

Lesson 10- Barriers & The Coping Power Toolbox
Lesson objectives:
Students will review the Coping Power curriculum, with a focus on self-control and active coping strategies.
Students will list barriers to specific coping strategies that might arise during challenging situations.
Students will identify their preferred active coping, relaxation, thought-based coping, and self-control strategies.

Lesson 11- Applying Coping Power Skills to a Bullying Situation
Lesson objectives:
Students will discuss the effects of bullying.
Students will evaluate the differences between bystanders and upstanders.
Students use the PICC model to evaluate action choices in response to bullying outside of school.
Students will identify assertive communication and coping strategies they can use if they experience or witness bullying.

Lesson 12- Wrapping Up Coping Power
Lesson objectives:
Students will review the content learned from the previous sessions of the Coping Power program.
Students will evaluate how the Coping Power program has helped them.
Students will celebrate their growth throughout the Coping Power program.
